shabby chic

There are lots of places to go in Edinburgh if you are looking for something stylish to bring a tired room to life. These range from big department stores like John Lewis and Ikea to small independent shops where the goods on offer change from week to week. I tend to avoid the bigger stores and do something slightly different, although I have been known to mix and match - but always on a budget. Below are three of my favourite places to visit when I'm considering how to give a room some character - and find a bargain!

  • * Going down to an auction at Ramsay Cornish in the Bonnington area makes for a nice trip at the weekend. There are general sales every Saturday. Here you can find interesting, inexpensive and surprising items. Some things might need refurbished, but this should be reflected in their sale value. Telephone: 0131 553 7000. 15-17 Jane Street, Edinburgh, EH6 5HE.

  • * I love to go the Farrow + Ball showroom in Stockbridge and talk to the very knowledgable girls who work there. They are passionate about colour and they really know their stuff when it comes to paint and wallpaper. Colour is endlessly fascinating, the colours you choose for your home inevitably reflect your tastes and character. Telephone: 0131 226 2216. NW Circus Pl, Edinburgh, Midlothian EH3 6SX

  • * If I need to refurbish an old sofa I always go to James Aird, Upholsterer on Ashley Terrace for a really good deal. Telephone: 0131 337 1466. 32 Ashley Terrace, Edinburgh EH11 1RE
    Happy bargain hunting.
